Cozy Cocoa Made From Cacao

This cocoa is both delicious and nourishing. It does not include any processed sugars, and it has gut-nourishing ingredients including cacao powder (which is considered a superfood and is also virtually caffeine-free)* and, believe it or not, chicken broth; don’t worry, you won’t be able to taste it, but it gives it a lovely depth. You can indulge in chocolatey goodness without the guilt knowing that you’re satisfying your chocolate craving while also nurturing your body.

Equipment

  • Sauce pan
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Mesh strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 cup High quality milk or non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 cup Chicken broth or chicken bone broth
  • 2 squares High quality chocolate (preferably one made with cacao such as the HU chocolate brand) You may also use a couple tbsps of chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp Cacao Powder
  • 2-3 tbsp Maple syrup
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Vanilla or a little more if you like ๐Ÿ™‚

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate bar pieces (or chocolate chips) on medium heat in a medium saucepan. Whisk continuously until melted.
  • When chocolate is melted, add 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup chicken broth, slowly stirring so the chocolate begins to dissolve. It won't dissolve fully until the liquid is hot.
  • Add cacao powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla. Stir/whisk ingredients on medium heat until steaming, but not quite boiling. Most of the cacao powder should be dissolved at this point.
  • Pour cocoa into a mug through a mesh strainer to catch any bits that did not dissolve. This is not a necessary step, but I highly recommend because it makes the cocoa extra smooth. Otherwise it can be a touch grainy.
  • Snuggle up and enjoy!

*Even though cacao is virtually caffeine-free, if you are breastfeeding, be cautious, because it does contain a stimulant that may or may not effect your baby’s sleep. I figured that out the hard way while breastfeeding my second born and noticed it affecting his sleep.
